Xiamen Airlines was founded in 1984 as the first privately owned airline in China, and has operated almost entirely Boeing aircraft ever since – but only narrow-body aircraft – the 737 and 757. As the city of Xiamen, like many cities in China, has grown, so too has demand for air travel and the desire to establish international transport links for the city.
